And there goes the casino.......

In response to the Senate legislation that does not reserve a casino license for an Indian tribe, Mashpee Wampanoag chairman, Cedric Cromwell, threw a temper tantrum today. An article in tomorrow's Boston Herald quotes Cromwell:

“If the state gives a commercial license to another casino operator, we won’t pay the state a cent when we build a casino in Southeastern Massachusetts once expanded gaming is approved,” said Cedric Cromwell. “We will destroy the competition because we won’t pay licensing fees or taxes and we will provide a great player experience with more wins.”

Extorting the state with a threat he can never follow through on seems like such a bad idea. I am pretty sure with these remarks, Cedric Cromwell just bumped the Fall River Casino plans to the bottom of the list.

Mayor Flanagan and Counselor Torres, please rethink this.

You know, it is funny the way this has played out. Torres, Fiola, and Flanagan cut a deal with this character, without doing an investigation into his past or his resume (which is falsified by the way), and then their 'partner' in economic development throws down the gauntlet when he doesn't get his way.

We should distance ourselves from Cedric Cromwell as quickly as possible. Flanagan should denounce his threats and defend the Commonwealth here. Otherwise, he will put Fall River back at least a decade in state and federal funding for projects. Politics 101: Don't piss off the governor!

"If we have land into trust, we could do class II gaming and not give (the state) a dime," he said. "The state will get nothing. We're not threatening. We're just trying to work out the facts so everyone will win."

Sen. Steven Panagiotakos, chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which filed the bill, told the Times the state's casinos will be up and running before the tribe clears its federal hurdles. He said that would make it difficult for the tribe to get financing for a casino to compete

Torres, Flanagan, and Fiola's plans for this casino were so poorly researched and executed I had a feeling the whole thing would implode, but I didn't think it would be this quick!

It is really unfortunate we lost out on the biopark over this fiasco.

You didn't lose the biopark yet or did UMass announce they skipped town for New Bedford or elsewhere? UMass was smart and took the Governor's advice and sat back and waited. This whole saga will be over by August 1st and UMass will probably be back in their original location having only lost a couple of months to all the foolishness.

but the voters won't forget who mucked it up....and we won't get those 1million union jobs they touted for months either.

The Redevelopment Authority mucked it up and you don't get to vote on their membership. And it was never a million union jobs, I think they said it would be 1,000 to 1,500 union jobs during construction. I don't want to lose the biopark but the anti-casino side didn't do themselves any favors with all the exaggerations. Inform people's decision-making, don't lie and scare them to try to get your way.

There have been no lies on the part of the anti-casino side. Not one. All the misinformation has come from the RA, Fiola, Torres, and the Mashpees.

Remember please this one FACT: the Mashpees were granted Federal recognition because JACK ABRAMOFF was their champion. He was the scum who got that done.

You do business with bad people, you stink like the bad people. Fall River has dirty hands in this one. We are all dirty now.

There have been no lies on the anti-casino side. Not one. Except for the previous post that said 1 million jobs were promised when that was never the case. Oh and how about the one about the casino blocking out all of the stars in the sky at night? Wingnuts.

An astronomer has said that if we build it here, that size, open 24/7, with lighting that they currently use, it WILL blot out the stars in the sky in Fall River. It is called light pollution and it is real.

Ever been to a casino at night? Look up. No stars.

This place is scheduled to be huge. With shopping space 5x the size of the Swansea mall.

Entertainment, shopping, hotels, indoor water park, gaming, etc. Yes, it will blot out the stars.

I have no idea about the 1 million that poster mentioned. He or she is not named and may be misinformed. But not PROOF that anti-casino people lie.

Stop calling people who disagree with you names. It is unbecoming a corporate council.

The tribe has already filed an application to place the land in trust. See the video in the link below from an interview aired yesterday with Cromwell.

Ever been to Vegas? Lots of casinos there and guess what happens when you look up at the night sky? You see plenty of stars. The point is not to make arguments that weaken your case or just make you look plain old nuts.

Light pollution is a real thing, it exists and it could very well happen here. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/11/light-pollution/klinkenborg-text

This is already a city full of streetlights and light pollution. So is every other city. Want a clear sky? Move to central Maine.

Keep using that as an excuse so that you can continue to look like a retard.

The casino may not happen, but idiots that make fruitless points about things that have no relevance to the issue at hand only marginalize themselves. A casino will make no difference to Fall River's night sky. Now shut up about it.

When you say you see dumb people, is that because you are looking in the mirror?

I See Dumb People said...

That's fucking hilarious. There are a dozen reasons why a casino would be bad for this area, but all you can come up with is light pollution? I suppose that the 90,000 people and hundreds of businesses in this city don't throw off any light to the sky, and a casino will ruin our perfect view of the night sky...please don't bang your helmet on the way off the bus.

It is ONE reason why casinos would be bad for Fall River. ONE out of many. However, that one reason may make a difference to somebody when they know the truth. You only hear jobs, jobs, jobs. However, there are people who are affected by things like light pollution. It might make them think twice.

So if there are a dozen reasons why a casino would be bad for this area, name them. Go ahead. Make my day.

A casino in Fall River will blot out the night sky, no light from the stars shall be seen and we will be enveloped in everlasting darkness. It will be like the land of Mordor under Sauron. LMAO. You just can't help some people even if you try. Proceed with the chucking of all credibility right out of the window. Let it commence!

Welfare recipients withdraw nearly $2million from casino ATM's

Destination Fall River is right! (for more welfare recipients)

You want 12 reasons? Gee that's tough, I mean, it's not like there have never been any casinos built in this country or studies done about them. Um, off the top of my head, things that will affect the local area:

1. Increases in petty crime.
2. Increases in violent crime.
3. Increases in prostitution.
4. Increases in drug abuse.
5. Decreases in the number of local-owned small businesses.
6. Increased poverty and widening of the income gap.
7. Increase in chronically addicted gambling addicts.
8. Decreases in property values.
9. Increases in unwanted traffic.
10. Increases in local unemployment.
11. Increases in public spending that far offsets tax revenue for things like social services and increased public safety needs.
12. Increased corruption.

Hey, but I don't give a shit. A casino is a foregone conclusion in this state. We are in the generation of legalizing vices, so when is pot going to happen? Casinos in urban areas can be very detrimental if they are not carefully thought out. Read up, most large urban centers with casinos prefer smaller, pedestrian casinos to mega-theme park casinos because it becomes just another small diversion rather than a vacuum sucking in all of the disposable income in the area from the people that can least afford to part with it.
