The Herald News Makes God Sad --Bernie Sullivan

Bernie Sullivan's weekly "editorials" (listen below) on WSAR just keep getting more foolish. His target this week was the Herald News, the police, Herald News commenters, and things that make God sad (ie the Herald News).

I think perhaps the most egregious lines in his verbal diarrhea were about the police:

"It is not the Mayor who is the problem. Where was the tight bond of brotherhood and sisterhood we hear so much about, when the call came to agree to wage adjustments that would save the jobs of many. They talk of taking a bullet for each other, but I guess that love affair doesn't extend to a pay adjustment"

In my opinion, the Herald News has done a 180. They are reporting in depth, on a variety of news stories, and it no longer pains me to read it. I think the comment section of the online paper is a great outlet for residents to share their thoughts and collaborate with ideas.

Bernie claims that the Herald News has the secret agenda of selling ads to make money...no shit (sorry mom) - that is how they stay in business, dumbass (again).

Is it easier to trust a newspaper whose agenda is selling ads and papers or the local radio station whose owners are trying to promote their political agenda, get their candidates elected, and keep an option to purchase on prime real estate in Fall River?

I'll take the newspaper hocking 'headache medication' any day, Bernie.

My intial thought upon hearing this foolishness this morning was:

"Hello Pot, this is Kettle"

WSAR was trashing the HN for doing exactly what they do only for the other side.

Unfortunately, the managment at WSAR is so blinded by their own self-righteousness that they can see the forest through the trees.

I have heard crapitorials in the past that made me shake my head and wonder. However, now that they have the nerve to go after the police officers that lay their lives on the line to protect them day in and day out, I have decided that I will not frequent ANY business that advertises on that station (I started my list this morning). I just cannot do it in good conscience.

You are absolutely right. I love a good boycott and I will definitely join you in one.

Anonymous said...

Please list their advertisers since they don't sell secret ads and I can boycott as well.

Anonymous said...

Not only boycott businesses advertising on WSAR, but call those businesses and tell them that you are going to tell all of your family and friends to boycott. Hit WSAR in the pocketbook.

Just anonymous, I agree with you.

In my opinion, The HN has been a litte easier to read lately. Their editorials on the Mayor, the layoffs and how the mayor operates is dead on. WSAR knows its dead on, hence they have kicked up their anti-HN movement.

To just anonymous: thanks for the heads up. I was going to Saber TV to buy a new HD TV, but now I will be going to another store.

The degree of hypocrisy oozing from the words and tone of WSAR's most recent foray against the Herald News utterly defies description. It is not difficult in the least to picture Bernie Sullivan smirking cynically as he read those lines of ever more strident invective aimed at the Herald News, the Fall River municipal employee unions, and all others who dare to speak out in defiance of the actions of Blameless Bob and the interests he actually represents (e.g., not ours). One has to wonder at this point what the true motivation of WSAR may be in continuing these bombastic assaults; it couldn't possibly be based on some desperate hope that Bernie's hollow rhetoric will finally be able to persuade all these benighted souls of the error of their ways, could it? Bernie's latest words on behalf of WSAR truly represent a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I have to join the bandagon on this one, Calling the companies tomorrow, and requesting to speak to who's in charge of Advertising!!! Hit them where it hurts... Pocketbook, and Bad Publicity!

The Herald News since being bought out has really put together a better newspaper.

If anyone plans on taking their money out of St Anne's (which wouldn't be the worst idea in the world), whatever you do, don't take it over to Citizens Union!

Bernie Sullivan is nothing more than a "lackey" for the Karams and Boss Correia. Please excuse me for nothing more than personal recollection (and perhaps incorrect!!!), but wasn't he a priest at one time? I guess "the confessional" admonishes all. It's going to be real interesting to see how WSAR handles the impending civil lawsuit with Stephen Karam, et al...
To "This is from Jacques," I believe in Bernie's mind, it's "hallowed" (vs. hollow)rhetoric. Amen!
LOL

That's OK about the potty talk, Shamrock my dear. Mr. Bernie makes me want to say naughty words, too.
Love,
Mom

Anon 18:43, what's this about a civil suit against "Two Fisted" Steve Karam? You not talking about Keri Rodrigues' lawsuit, right? I didn't think that had anything to do with Steve. Please do tell me more, I loves me some dirt on that whole effed up family....

Anonymous said...

You mean stephenm karam on the board of the froed/rda???

Anonymous said...

WSAR is still trying to blame Ed Lambert and his admistration for the mess this Mayor has created. This is Bob Correia's budget. He drafted it, he presented it, and the Council voted on it. Stop trying to blame a real Mayor for your fiscal shortcomings!

Anonymous said...

I mean Stephen Karam, Chairman of the the Bristol Workforce Investment Board. Don't know if he's on the FROED/RDA board. He is BooBoo Karam's son. More parochial monkey business, as usual, in our fine city.

Anonymous said...

To W.J. Blogaah----I don't think Stephen Karam should be referred to, as "two fisted" Karam in this scenario. "L'il man" Karam is most appropriate, given his lack of integrity, objectivity, and overall business savvy. "Puppet" is also a most appropriate term to use; it remains to be seen if he becomes a "Pinnachio," (sorry for the sp????)in what's to come. Bets are on that these monkeys are exposed for what they really are. Anyone want to bet otherwise? Go for it.

i agree it clearly is "the pot calling the kettle black" i almost fell off my chair when i heard it. then they kept repeating it all day. the more i heardit the more i laughed. i am surprised bernie wasn't choking as he spoke.

Before you go boycotting places, you might want to make sure they don't also advertise in the HN.

Newspapers are hurting enough without an otherwise seemingly righteous boycott cutting into their already worsening profits.

Just a thought.

Anonymous said...

Scamrock and you are objective you have had a counter on the mayors last day in office for months WSAR has had a fantastic ad run over the last yr ..profits are way up even in this economy instead of trying in vain to boycott wsar you should encourage more advertisers to do business with the Herald News .I hear the Herald will be out of business by April!!!

Anonymous said...

WSAR is a joke and everyone knows it. They are nothing more than the Mayor's public relations firm.

Some of WSAR's callers are under the mistaken impression that the Herald News is fueding with the radio station. Remember. The truth is that the Herald News has editorialized against the mayor's policies. WSAR has attacked the Herald News. This is a one-way fight and I'm glad the Herald News hasn't taken the bait.

Anonymous said...

I don't ever recall the herald writing anything about wsar?

However, I do hear certain radio personalities practically read the herald news on the air and their newcasts even reference - reported by heraldnews.com.

Than the radio personalities threaten anonymous on line commentors on the herald site and the fall riverblog. Their editorials are personal attacks and yet we are not allowed to rebut.

Get the picture??

Fear and Loathing in Fall River said...

As a matter of fact, the Herald has printed editorials that WSAR sent them. They have printed them AS WSAR Editorials, with no specific person named on them.

I think that WSAR should allow the same courtesy and read this editorial on the air in fairness.

I think we need a new station, how hard can it be to run one?

Anonymous said...

The problem is the Herald News and WSAR both suck...The Herald, at least will fold in the next 12 months

Anonymous said...

I don't know they have this new publisher and he is not from fall river so they actually have made a turn around on the sterile news lately.

Anonymous said...

Will someone listen to wsar so I don't have to and list the names of their advertisers???

Anonymous said...

This just in: Bernie's editorial bashing the paper mysteriously disappears from WSAR website!

shamrock said...

Don't worry I saved it. I'll have it up in a minute.

Anonymous said...

I wonder why the editorial has been deleted. Was it even too much for the few remaining fans of the station? Did the smackdown from the HN publisher make the brave brothers back down?

Anonymous said...

The company that owns the HN might go down but the paper itself will certainly continue to exist in some form maybe it's will be online only but that's more than a few years off.

Too bad too, I see a marked difference in the HN since that company has took over.

Exactly...news outlets are not supposed to have a "side."

Anonymous said...

WSAR clearly has a side, you can see the names of the brothers Karam on Correia's campaign finance reports. Do you see the ownership or management of the Herald and their names on anyone's campaign finance reports? No! They don't have a side, they report on the facts and then they editorialize and give their opinion on what's happened. Unfortunately the facts are that Bob Correia has messed up quite a bit. Unfortunately reporting on those facts leds to editorials calling him out for it. The Karams would love it if everything went back to the way it was before and they could just quietly pull the strings from behind the scenes. Too bad guys, the truth is out and the brothers Karam and Bob Correia aren't going to be allowed to run our city into the ground for much longer. Your 30 year reign of terror is about to come to an end.

I would hope Mr. Pubisher (sic)(front page) would consider all of the comments regarding the turnaround of the newspaper and also the comments which point out the double standards the paper also shares with WSAR.
I think we can all take advantage of this situation to take a deeper look at the propensity of the Herald News to prop up the friends and associates of the editor just as WSAR props up the friends and associates of the Karems.
It is an interesting can of worms that has been opened, one which if Mr. Burke is as clever and thorough as his writing indicates, will lead him to question the news philanthropy of those in the favor of Mrs. Herren, excuse me, Ms. Straton.
When She was married to Mr. Herren, he was a hero as were his kids, then non-existent.
When her friend Ms. Gleason was made election commissioner, all of a sudden the paper became pro Lambert. When Lambert got her boyfriend's agency SMILES lot of money, lambert was to be protected and even his affair with Ms. Assad was overlooked.(imagine them overlooking the current mayor as grotesque a thought as it is having an affair with a staffer)
And then there is SMILES itself.

So if all of this can be done for friends what has been to enemies? You have done a great job so far Mr. Burke, but don't stop there. Fall River knows your paper better than you do.

At least part of what we're witnessing in Fall River is the power of blogs. Blogs provide people with an opportunity to comment without fear of repricussion. In a place like Fall River where certain politicians and power-brokers try to rule with an iron fist, blogs make it possible to right a wrong... for good to overcome evil.

If you're one of those power-brokers, you hate blogs. LOL

Notice wsar deleted the podcast, did not post the durfee st amaral, fiola interview. And when steve camara was supposed to go on wsar for a rebuttal interview hurricane had to reschule it, conveniently for some time in the year 2099.

Anonymous said...

Herren knows he is wrong about what he said about Steve Camara and the information Herren spewed was all lies. Rather than admit he was wrong and apologize for smearing Camara's name and calling him a liar, Herren will just keep cancelling the interview.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Sullivan and Herren are going the way of the dinosaur. Old, outdated and no longer relevant.

According to a February 26 article in the Boston Business Journal, Gatehouse Media (GHS) is one billion dollars in debt and has had its credit line reduced by 35 million.
That's not to say that the Herald News is in trouble, but it wouldn't hurt if we all showed support for the HN BY EITHER SUBSCRIBING TO IT OR BUYING A PAPER EVERY DAY.

Anonymous said...

I never completely understand why everyone thinks Lisa Stratton is ridiculously partial. Isn't that all moot because she wasn't management there until long after they divorced. Plus, if it runs like any other newsroom, I doubt she even has much input into what stories are going into the paper anyway, that'd be more the job of assignment editors and reporters wouldn't it?

Anonymous said...

Back when The Herald news was printing WSAR editorials..Lisa Stratton was trying to get an afternoon talk show on WSAR to go with her other blatantly based media job.
Karams said she'd get the show if The HN endorsd Correia.
Lisa gave Correis the endorsement, but trhe Karams welched on the deal and gave the show to Hurricane. They already had the endorsement, so they decided they didn't have to pay off.

That's why HN hates Correia

Anonymous said...

But that's what I don't understand ... the HN makes decisions through an editorial board, not just one person, it doesn't run like it used to when Bernie was there.

Even if she were dating the mayor, it wouldn't matter because the endorsement is voted on by multiple people.

I believe that's why that board was created ... to void out personal bias.

As far as liberal bias goes, I'd say yes, but here's the thing, if the paper's view generally reflects that of the people it covers, wouldn't ALL media in southeastern mass or mass and r.i. in general, have a liberal slant just by the nature of their constituency. All dem sens, reps, etc.

Anonymous said...

The Herald has not "fabricated" their stories- the mayuh has given them enough material to hang himself.
