Substance over Cliche

"Politicians indulge in excessive cliche because they are playing it safe. Something not always consistent with real leadership." John Keller wbz news

Let me preface by saying that I firmly believe Cathy Ann Viveiros made the wrong decision when she opted to ignore the will of the 7,000+ voters who signed the referendum petition to keep the fire chief a civil service position. I am still bothered by her decision but I do know that it was her own. She researches issues and comes to her own conclusions. So, while I think she made the wrong decision, I know it was her own. I am still holding a bit of a grudge over this, but I am not a one issue voter, and I think she is the better choice in this mayoral election.

Although I did not vote for Cathy Ann in the preliminary, she handily demonstrates a strong command of the issues needing to be addressed in Fall River. She is well researched and has tangible suggestions on solutions. She has a platform on low income housing, a platform on education, budget plans, etc. Her opponent has not shown me the same level of preparedness and qualification for the job of mayor.

I congratulate Will Flanagan on making it this far in the race. However, I am bothered by his lack of substance and his cliche's in lieu of substantive answers. While Flanagan's lack of specificity could be intentional, it leads me to think that he doesn't know the answers to the questions asked. I really really really wanted to be able to vote for him, but he hasn't convinced me he is capable.

Interesting that when you wanted bob out change was good. Obama = change.

Anonymous said...

You are making the false assertion that Change = getting Bob out is the same as Change = Voting for Will. Yes, getting rid of Bob is change. We are all happy because of this change.

We wanted Bob out for very specific reasons. Not the least of which that he was a really really really really really bad Mayor. Bob made very poor decisions, and forced them through with a heavy hand, and no explanation.

Bob was extremely bad for the city.

So yes, getting rid of Bob = Change.

Bob didn't make it through the primary. So Will is not running against Bob. Will is running against Cathy Ann Viveiros.

I'm going to try to be fair and not plug Cathy, but I do want to show you something. Take a look at Cathy's website: http://www.electcathy.com You will see that She has put forward clear ideas, and platforms. She has been consistent with these since her election to the City Council in 2007. If you go back, you will see that many of these ideas are the same.

Cathy has put herself out there, and shown us who she is. Even if you don't agree with everything she has done, you can at least admit that she makes her own decisions, and doesn't make them in a vacuum.

Now as for Will.

Here is Will's website. It's very scant. But be sure to take a look: http://www.willflanagan.com it looks like it has gotten a bit better.

But, we won't focus on Will's website, because perhaps he hasn't put that much time into it. After all, having a website isn't a requirement for being Mayor, just ask Bob.

What has Will given us? He has alluded to his career as a prosecutor, and his career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel. I'll admit, this is impressive. However, when you peel back the rhetoric, you see that Will has only been an Attorney for just under 4 years. I can't imagine he has gained all that much experience in those 4 years.

So, what does Will stand for? From what I can see, there is just a lot of rhetoric. It's as if Will has Deval Patrick, and Obama's campaign manager, and they are trying to fool us all by putting out a message of Hope and Change. Well, we need more than that.

I don't want to dismiss the voters of Fall River, but to be honest, I don't know that they are the most discerning of folk. However, I think they are smarter, or at least more reactionary, than to buy into a message of Hope with no substance. As I am sure you have seen, going door to door, Fall River Voters expect a lot from a candidate. They will dress you down without remorse if they feel you are being dishonest. They are the common people. Obama's message of Hope, if you recall, wasn't enough here to persuade this 'Hillary town.' To vote for someone just on that message, and it won't be enough for you.

However, I'm not sure if Will has the substance, or grasp of knowledge of Fall River issues. For all intents and purposes, he is a Taunton Lawyer. As far as I can tell, Will has treated Fall River as a bedroom for the last 4 years, and now he wants to be the Mayor of his bedroom.

I'm sorry if this is harsh. But this is what I see in this election. I'm not going to vote for someone who won't tell me on record what they stand for. If that is 'interesting' to you, then I am sorry. However, I will have to wish you good luck in your attempt. I just wish you were more open with us.

And, don't blame the economy here. Just tell us what you think, I want to know who you are, and what your values are. I don't want to know that you plan on 'moving Fall River forward.' Everyone wants to do that, even Bob in his ineptitude wanted to do that. He even has in many ways. But, give us something to go on, some meat that we can sink our teeth into.

Change, Hope, whatever. It won't work here.

Anon 8:08 - When I wanted Bob out, I wanted the removal of a dictator from office. I like actual change but, like I said, I am getting tired of hearing the word in lieu of substance. You can't just tell me you are the change candidate and expect my vote. Both candidates are "change."

And please know that I was never an "anybody but bob" club member. It was an interesting concept but there were choices worse than Bob.

Anonymous said...

I share your worry about Will lacking substance in his responses to some questions but I think Will can be trusted while Cathy can't. Here's why:

I agree with you that Cathy ignoring over 7,000 plus registered voters was a bad thing but it's more than that...

Cathy voted to shut out public input, to not allow people to speak at the infamous 1 p.m. Friday meeting. She could've been in favor of an appointed Fire Chief while at the same time going against the rubberstampers and at least allowing people to speak.

Can you trust someone that now says she wants to listen to everyone but wouldn't before? This is an example of why people say she will be Bob Correia in a dress. Shutting out public input and shunning democracy are classic signs of a dictator in the making.

Should Cathy have even voted on the Fire Chief issue in the first place? Cathy's husband is an EMT and so is an employee of the Fire Department. She was voting on who her husband's next boss would be or at least how her husband's next boss would be picked. You don't think she should've abstained from voting at all on this issue? This was a serious breach of ethics. This shows she is ethically challenged. Not a great quality to have in a mayor.

So what we have with Cathy is qualities of a dictator, as in not allowing public input and her willigness to play fast and loose with ethics.

This is the woman that you want to vote for? The female Bob Correia comments are right on given her track record over the last 2 years...

Anonymous said...

Isn't Cathy's husband an EMT? Aren't they private contractors, and not working directly for the city?

After watching last night's debate all I can say is that I've made the decision to write in Eric Poulin for Mayor.

HAHAHAHA Will is to Eric as 'Coy and Vance' are to 'Bo and Luke Duke'!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

A Dukes of Hazzard reference? Seriously, have we gone all rednecky now lol? Yeah Will is more like Coy and Vance and Poulin was more like Bo and Luke but I'm still voting for Coy and Vance. Cathy ain't no Daisy. More like the female version of Boss Hogg. Or put it this way, if Correia was Boss Hogg then Cathy was his Sheriff Roscoe.

In the wsar debate Will flanagan didn't know what the content of the referendum petition was! He also suggested that to pay for the $5 million owed for the cso we should charge the Tiverton users. Cathy pointed out that $5 million would be a big burden on the 400 Tiverton users.

Anonymous said...

I an listening to the WSAR debate. God help us if this guy gets elected. HE IS NOT READY!!

Anonymous said...

Neither one is ready for prime time but neither was Big Bob. 2 more years of crap no matter how you slice it.

Anonymous said...

CAV is not Bob.. get that straight...

I think we have a new name for Will.

Will the Unready!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86thelred_the_Unready

Anonymous said...

So do I vote for the empty rhetoric or the political opportunist? Decisions, decisions.

The political opportunist sounds a lot better in the debates but of course telling you what you want to hear is the hallmark of a political opportunist. She is for public input even though before she was against it.

I am thinking I will take the empty rhetoric guy and hope he fills in the blanks later. At least he isn't lying to my face. CAV's track record shows that she says one thing now but did something different before. The other guy has no track record.

I am going to take a chance on "hoping" that I don't get crap rather than on knowing that I will. So it's Will over Cathy hands down.

Anonymous said...

Anon 13:48... That would be an additional $12,500 annually from each of the 400 Tiverton users of FR water.

That is what it would take to make up the $5 million to pay for the federally mandated CSO project.

I think it is absolutely fair to ask Tiverton residents to pony up an additional $12,500 annually. Checks can be made to my vacation fund.

I am an intelligent, educated Fall River voter. I resent the comments of a previous "anon" who implied that educated, intelligent people will vote for Cathy. It is that same condescension and arrogance that cost her my vote.

Anonymous said...

Anon 21:56

Tell us why you are voting for Will, not why you aren't voting for Cathy?

Anonymous said...

I object to the idea that CAV's supporters are putting out there that somehow intelligent voters are CAV voters and the rest are barnyard animals. Well MOOOOve out of the way Cathy and make room for Will on the 6th floor.

Some of us are intelligent enough to see through the CAV smokescreen. You claim you will listen to we the people but your track record over the last 2 years on the Council includes taking votes to shut down and not allow public input at meetings. Is that someone that believes in democracy or another Correia type dictator in the making? So don't get offended by the Bob in a dress comments because they are 100% accurate.

Anonymous said...

Other than the referendum petition issue, I cannot think of another time CAV denied citizen input. And remember, while 9000 people signed the petition, another 85,000 did not.

Anonymous said...

One instance is still one too many because why would you ever take a vote to refuse public input?

First of all there was a meeting planned for 1 p.m. on a Friday which was designed to discourage people from attending. Cathy didn't speak up about this and say that it was wrong.

It was well known that a Council colleague (Steve Camara) couldn't attend the meeting due to a funeral that afternoon and the plan was to go ahead with it anyway. That was insensitive and wrong and Cathy didn't speak up about it.

Then the people that actually did show up to this meeting were not allowed to speak because Cathy joined with the 5 other Correia votes on the Council to deny public input. That was incredibly wrong and is a style of governing that shows someone that prefers dictatorship over democracy. Just like when they dropped the stormwater fee on businesses without listening to their pleas to give them more time to prepare for it.

Long live Cathy the dictator! She is Bob in a dress and the voters know it and she won't get their vote on election day.

Maybe someone here can tell me how the HN decides whos name goes first? Alphabetical? Nope C is before W or is it based on the last name so F is before V? Maybe it is male before female? I would like to know becasue Flanagan is always first, that is enough to get his name in the 25% of brain dead FR voters and snap they vote for Will, no matter who we get we are better off, but the HN is not a free press they use the paper to get things done

Anonymous said...

Names are always listed alphabetically by last name, where have you been? They've been doing that to all of us since grade school and that is the way the ballots are set up too. Or would you prefer they start listing the ballot in reverse alphabetical order to cater to your candidate Ms. Viveiros? Honestly, people will bitch about the dumbest things and make up the weirdest shit.

Anon 11:55

The firefighters had a very brief time in which to obtain signatures and were only required to get a certain percentage of registered voters. The fact that they were able to get 7,000+ voters to sign the petition is evidence of the strong opposition to Bob's/Cathy's imposition of a contract chief.

And Anon 12:29 is right. To deny citizen input even one time is shameful.

Anonymous said...

Over 9,000 people signed it, over 7,000 were certified as registered voters by the Election office. 13,000 came out to vote in the last election. Think about it.

reality check said...

shamrock you claim Cathy has command of the issues, when in reality she doesn't. She sounds convincing, yet she has proven that she plays fast and loose with the facts. Trying to lead people to believe that CSO bonds were all at 0% for 30 years, and after being caught she says they are at 0 to 2%. The reality is there are several in the 4 to 5% range. Even when she gets caught dishing out misinformation she does it again.

She was also proven wrong on the strip clubs and Mendon Ma. Flanagan proved on WSAR that her information was wrong.

She also leads people to believe that site based management is her great educational plan, when in reality it is part of ed-reform from 1993.

It's one thing to support your candidate, but to follow blindly and try to peddle her deceptions as command of the issues is a joke.

Just this year, at a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event I had organized called 1000 Valentines for the Troops, I met Will Flanagan for the first time.

This was a community event, held at the FR Armory, where anyone could come in and help us create valentines to send to Fall River and South Coast troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was a really wonderful event, and we made almost 700 of them. Community folks, kids, college students from Curry College, people who lived in other states---all arrived and stayed and stayed and painted and cut and pasted and wrote heartwarming messages.

Mr. Flanagan arrived with a campaign button on. He stood there. He watched. He had his hands in his pockets. People who knew him said, "Hello Will." I asked who he was, as he hadn't introduced himself. I was told that it was Will Flanagan.

At the time I thought it inappropriate to campaign at this event, and he was the only person who did so, even though other people who were running for office did not. They came as private citizens, dug in, made valentines, and shared good will.

Will Flanagan didn't do any of this. He just stood around for a while, then left. He never sat down. He never made a valentine, that I saw, and he didn't engage or participate.

I thought all of this very strange. He seemed so much like an outsider because he didn't join in, or play with us. My first impression was that this guy would rather campaign than participate. I was not impressed.

And first impressions are everything.

Can anyone please tell me what Will Flanagan has done for Fall River? One thing? One action that made this city a better place? One issue that he championed? One thing he brought before the City Council as his project? One organization he formed, or led, or spearheaded? One improvement that happened because of his actions? One neighborhood cleanup effort he sponsored? One educational event he organized?

How can you think he suddenly cares about a city, wanting to be its leader, when he has no record of helping it in the past? Where is the proof of his passion about the citizens? Does he love this city? Does he truly want what's best for us, or for him?

In all seriousness, I cannot tell.

Anonymous said...

I guess his first mistake was not knowing who the famous Stefani Koorey is. Maybe he should have printed up T-shirts and offered to do a neighborhood clean up /photo op in the Corky Row and insist on the crew wearing the T-shirts as a condition of "helping".

Anonymous said...

Stefani is right. The guy is pompous. When he first started running, he was following Steve around like a puppy dog trying to get to the events. Steve goes to, and participates in, these events, regardless of what office he is running for. Will has just shown up on the scene. He is more Taunton than Fall River. Even the people in Taunton don't want him. No offense to our friends in Taunton, but, we're sending him back your way...

I, for one, have never seen Will roll up his sleeves and do anything. He has seemingly come out from nowhere and is running for Mayor. I've sat across the table from Cathy Ann, both in meaningful discussion about topics at ad hoc and board meetings. I've also seen Cathy literally roll up her sleeves and get involved in doing grunt work. She's showed up on several occasions to just help out with mailings, and helping with other 'menial tasks' that needed to get done. She's never asked for recognition in them, in fact she seems embarrassed by it. She is a real community volunteer. She'll make a great Mayor.

Anonymous said...

You forget to add she helped after she decided to run for mayor. What did she do while she lived in westport ???????? Has she actually worked in Fall River????

Anonymous said...

Maybe will should go back to school and get a PHD in storytelling huh?

Skoorey said...

So in response to my very serious and thoughtful questions about what Mr. Flanagan has done for Fall River, I get two attacks.

If you can't answer the questions, stop attacking the one who asks them.

Actions ALWAYS speak louder than words.

Tell me, really tell me, what his actions have been to improve this city? I am quite serious.

I have lived in this city for just over a year and I have done a ton of stuff as there is a ton of stuff to do. There are causes and cleanups and important issues.

I am not running for anything. I am not boasting. I am merely saying that I haven't seen Mr. Flanagan's work. I want to know what he has done for the city. If you know, please share.

Anonymous said...

Well, to be fair, she was helping out and doing grunt work when she was City Councilor. Or at least that is when I observed her doing this. But it was long before she ever thought about running for Mayor this time.

Anonymous said...

She worked for a local company and assisted them in moving out of fall river.

Anonymous said...

What has Will done that qualifies him?

Skoorey said...

So, so far no one can offer up an initiative that Will Flanagan has spearheaded? Not one?

And you wish to vote for a man who has no track record of active involvement in Fall River society, politics, issues, or organizing?

A man who stood silent on the Durfee Tech issue when it was all in the news, stood silent on the school board controversy, when it was such a big news story, said nothing about the other million things that have come before the city council, zoning board, master plan committee, or anything else?

And now, all of a sudden, when he is running for an office, he has an opinion? Where was he then? It is easy to be a Monday morning quarterback. It is harder to do the work necessary to make change happen.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you are describing yourself stefani. where is the job description for mayor that says you have be a civil disobedient?

Anonymous said...

Where have you been for the past 40years- certainly not born and raised in fall river? So what makes you think you should have an opinion?

Skoorey said...

Again, only attacks on me.

I rest my case.

Anonymous said...

not an attack, you can't respond to that? I rest my case.

Anonymous said...

Viveiros unveiled a 10-point plan to attract new business by using existing businesses and the cluster strategy, which targets related businesses.

To increase tourism, she envisioned "Waltzing Waters": Lighted streams of water shooting out of the Taunton River, choreographed to music, that she said could prove a boon for the waterfront.

Anonymous said...

Will was one of the first to speak out on the stormwater fee, the only one to point out that the City Administrator could not also be head of the Board of Elections which led to backtracking by Bob Correia. When did anything Cathy did force Bob Correia to take action? Never since she was too busy voting along with him before she decided to run for mayor.

What's not accurate? Does she really have a combover?

Did she defend the war memorial?
Um, no she backed Bob.

Did she back the fire fighters petition?
No again, she backed Bob.

Did Westport elect her when she moved there for 2 years and ran for a position on the school committee?
Of course not, she would have used it on her resume.
